Background on The Activation and History of the 814th APS/CDS/SPS.
On April 1, 1955 change of command of Westover from the Military Air Transport Service (MATS) to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) was affected, and the 4050th Air Refueling Wing (ARW) was activated thus becoming the first operational unit under SAC at Westover. On or about January 1956 the 4050th ARW formed and staffed the 4050th Air Police Squadron under the command of the 4050th Air Base Group (AB Gp.)See Special Orders Number 14 Headquarters 4050th Air Refueling Wing (SAC).
On 2 September 1956 the 4050th Air Police Squadron was set down and all personnel were assigned to the 814th Air Police Sq (SAC) a component of the 814th Combat support Group under the 57 Air Division. The official transfer of the troops from the 4050th Air Police Squadron to the 814th Air Police Squadron/Combat Defense Squadron (814th APS/CDS) took place on September 2, 1956 by Special Order Number 174 of the 4050th ABG: See Special Orders Number 174.
Under authorization contained in AFM 35-11: 8th AFR 35-7: SAC General Order 41, dated 25 July 56. The 814th CDS/SPS remained a component of the 57 Air Division - 814th Combat Support Group until 2 Jan 1968 when the 814th SPS became a component of the 99th Bomb Wing and was reformed as the 99th Security Police Squadron. The troops of the 814th APS/CDS - 99th SPS were responsible for providing armed security for most all Westover AFB operational units. View the list of those units [here]

This 814th CDS patch Both the 99th Bomb Wing and the 99th Security Police Squadron have since been activated and relocated to Nellis AFB. The 99th Bomb Wing is now the 99th Air Base Wing and the 99th Security Police Squadron is now the 99th Security Forces Squadron and is a component of the 99th Security Forces Group which is responsible for Base and Weapons Security at Nellis. The 814th Security Police Squadron was reactivated on 1 Jan 1990 at Beal AFB, Calif. and inactivated 1 September 1991.

was worn between 1956 and 1964. This 814th SPS patch 
was worn from 1964 to 1968. In 1964 the 814th was moved from under direct line of command of the 57th Air Division and placed under the direct command of the 814th Combat Support Group and designated the 814th Security Police Squadron. The 814th Combat Support Group required a new patch be authorized for the 814th SPS which more closely followed the Heraldry of the 814th CSG 
thus the change. In 1968 the 814th was again moved from under the direct line of command of the 814th Combat Support Group and placed under the 99th Bomb Wing and designated the 99th Security Police Squadron. The 99th SPS continued to provide security for the 8th AF B52s as they were rotated in and out of South East Asia in support of actions conducted in the Vietnam War. The 99th was deactivated when Westover was deactivated in 1974 and the entire facility was transferred to the control of the US Air Force Reserve. Westover is now the largest US Air Force Reserve Base in the United States.
